Nara, Japan's first permanent capital (710-784 CE), is one of the country's most rewarding day trips. Home to eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, over 1,000 sacred deer, and some of Japan's most impressive temples, it's easily accessible from both Kyoto and Osaka.
Getting There
From Kyoto: 35 minutes on the Kintetsu Limited Express, or 45 minutes on the JR Miyakoji Rapid From Osaka: 45-50 minutes on JR or Kintetsu
Tip: Kintetsu arrives at a station closer to Nara Park; JR is covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
Morning: Nara Park & the Deer (9:00 AM - 11:00 AM)
Start your day at Nara Park, where over 1,000 sika deer roam freely. These deer are considered messengers of the gods and have been protected for centuries. Buy some deer crackers (shika senbei) to feed them. They've learned to bow for treats.
Deer etiquette:
- Hold crackers high until you're ready to feed
- Some deer are pushy; don't show fear
- Don't tease them with food
- Watch your belongings (they'll investigate bags for snacks)
Late Morning: Todai-ji Temple (11:00 AM - 12:30 PM)
Home to the world's largest bronze Buddha (15 meters tall), Todai-ji is Nara's most impressive sight. The Great Buddha Hall that houses it is one of the world's largest wooden structures. This is actually a smaller reconstruction than the original!
Look for the pillar with a hole the same size as the Buddha's nostril. Squeezing through is said to grant enlightenment.
Lunch: Naramachi (12:30 PM - 1:30 PM)
The old merchant district of Naramachi features narrow lanes, machiya townhouses, and excellent restaurants. Try kakinoha-zushi (sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves), a Nara specialty.
Afternoon: More Temples & Shrines (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM)
- Kasuga Taisha: Famous for its thousands of bronze and stone lanterns
- Kofuku-ji: Five-story pagoda, an iconic Nara symbol
- Isuien Garden: A formal Japanese garden with teahouse
Departure
Trains run frequently until late evening, so you can stay for sunset over the temple rooftops. A clean ending to a day in Japan's ancient capital.
