つぼ湯
Overview
UNESCO World Heritage bath where water reportedly changes color seven times a day.
Tiny rock-carved bath located in the heart of Yunomine Onsen, a village on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. It is significant as the only hot spring in the world registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The bath is a small wooden cabin over a natural hot spring hole in the creek bed, accommodating only two people at a time. Because of its small size and immense historical importance, the bath is used in 30-minute private rotations. Travelers must purchase a ticket at the local ticket office and wait for their number to be called. Tattoos are irrelevant here as the bath is entirely private for the duration of your session.
Local tips
Buy your ticket early as wait times can exceed 3 hours on weekends. Your Tsubo-yu ticket also includes entry to the larger public baths nearby.
