Overview

Concrete shell museum with one living-water artwork and open-sky views over Seto Inland Sea terraces.

The Teshima Art Museum on Teshima island in the Seto Inland Sea is a single-room concrete structure with no art on the walls. Designed by Ryue Nishizawa with artist Rei Naito, the interior holds an installation where water wells up from the floor through natural springs, pooling and moving across the surface in slow, unpredictable patterns. Two oval openings in the ceiling bring in light, rain, and wind, making each visit different. Shoes are removed at the entrance. The experience is quiet and impossible to rush. Advance tickets are required and sell out quickly on weekends and during Setouchi Triennale years.
