Sounkyo Onsen Village
Overview
Compact onsen village built across 600 stone steps in the Ishikari River canyon, the eastern gateway to Daisetsuzan National Park.
Sounkyo Onsen's pedestrian core stretches across roughly 600 stone steps cut into the canyon side, with the Sounkyo Visitor Center, the Kurodake Ropeway base, and a dozen ryokan compressed onto a single short loop. The Ishikari River runs below; cliffs of columnar basalt rise vertically on either side. Restaurants concentrate around the Choyotei district at the base of the steps. The bus terminal connects to JR Kamikawa Station 30 minutes east.
Local tips
Most ryokan offer day-use baths from late morning through mid-afternoon; check the Sounkyo Visitor Center for the rotating schedule.
