Overview
Vibrant red castle symbolising the unique culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
The political and cultural heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Its distinctive red architecture blends Japanese, Chinese, and native Ryukyuan styles. Although the main hall tragically burned down in 2019, the impressive walls, gates, and ongoing reconstruction are still well worth seeing.
Local tips
Check the reconstruction viewing areas, which offer a fascinating look at the traditional carpentry techniques being used to rebuild.
