Overview

One of the world's largest volcanic calderas with an active crater, vast grasslands, and dramatic mountain scenery.

Mount Aso's caldera measures 25 kilometers north to south and 18 kilometers east to west, large enough that towns and farmland exist inside it. The central volcanic group includes Nakadake, which remains active and holds a crater lake that shifts between turquoise and gray. When volcanic conditions permit, the crater is accessible by ropeway or on foot. The Aso Volcano Museum near the crater covers the geological history with interactive displays. Beyond the crater, the Aso-Kuju National Park contains vast grasslands where wild horses graze, hiking trails, and hot springs. The Daikanbodo viewpoint gives a full panorama of the caldera.
