Ancient 4,000-sqm cave on Demon Island, legendary home of the Momotaro ogre.

Legend says the demon from the Momotaro folktale lived in this 4,000-square-meter cave carved into Mount Washigamine on Megijima Island. Discovered in 1914, the man-made cavern extends 400 meters deep and dates back roughly 2,000 years to ancient mining activity. The 20-minute ferry ride from Takamatsu deposits you on an island with a public beach, seasonal art shows, and panoramic hilltop views.
