Makishi Public Market
第一牧志公設市場
Overview
Vibrant market selling fresh seafood, pork, and local produce, with upstairs restaurants cooking your purchases.
Makishi Public Market, just off Kokusai Street in Naha, has been the city's central food market since 1951. After a renovation it reopened in 2023 with a cleaner look but the same vendors selling colorful tropical fish, live lobster and shellfish, pork in every cut including face and feet, bitter melon, sponge gourd, and tropical fruits direct from farms. The most enjoyable way to eat here is to buy fresh seafood on the first floor and take it upstairs to one of the restaurants, who will cook it for a small fee. The surrounding alleys have quick-stop stalls selling fresh tempura, steamed cakes, and goya juice.
Local tips
