Overview
Japan's highest natural lake west of Nikko, drawing visitors escaping humid summers with high-altitude scenery.
Lake Chuzenji formed roughly 20,000 years ago when lava from Mount Nantai blocked the valley's natural drainage. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, foreign diplomats settled along its shores to escape Tokyo's summer heat, and the former British and Italian embassy villas are now open to visitors. The lake became associated with fly fishing during that period, a tradition that continues. Walking paths trace the shoreline, shaded by greenery in early summer and framed by vivid red and yellow foliage in autumn. The cobalt water and quiet surroundings make it equally pleasant to visit with no agenda beyond walking and watching.
Local tips
The Irohazaka winding road up (48 hairpin turns) is an experience in itself. The lake is stunning in October when the maples turn.
