ラ コリーナ近江八幡
Overview
A grass-roofed fantasy confectionery village designed by architect Terunobu Fujimori amid rice paddies.
La Collina is the flagship campus of Taneya/Club Harie confectioners, designed by maverick architect Terunobu Fujimori. The main building features a living grass roof and charred-wood exterior that looks like a Studio Ghibli set. Inside, watch baumkuchen being layered in the open kitchen and eat freshly baked castella. The campus includes rice paddies, a copper-clad gift shop, and architecture that blurs the line between building and nature.
Local tips
Get the fresh-from-the-oven baumkuchen at the main building cafe. It's warm, moist, and completely different from the packaged version sold as gifts.
