Hiji Falls

Tallest in Yambaru National Park at 26 meters, reached via a 90-minute round-trip trail through dense subtropical forest. The path passes under a valley arch bridge 80 meters above, crosses a wooden suspension bridge at the halfway point, and passes the low walls of an abandoned charcoal kiln from when the forest was actively managed for fuel. Pilgrims once came to worship river and mountain deities here. Along the trail, Okinawa woodpeckers, Ryukyu damselflies, and Barbour's eyelid skinks are regularly spotted. There are marked spots where hikers can wade into the river to cool off before the final stretch to the falls.
