Overview

The reconstructed Dutch trading post where Japan maintained its only Western contact for 200 years of isolation.

From 1641 to 1853, this tiny fan-shaped artificial island was Japan's sole window to the West. Dutch traders lived here in a closely watched enclave, and Western science, medicine, and culture filtered into Japan through this single point. The reconstructed buildings house excellent exhibits on this remarkable period of controlled cultural exchange.

Local tips

Visit after dark. The buildings are lit up and the night ticket is cheaper. The Chief Factor's residence has the best period furniture.
