Overview
Hokkaido's largest national park with Mt. Asahi at its core, an alpine ropeway from the onsen village at the base, and a string of remote hot-spring towns scattered through the highlands.
Daisetsuzan National Park covers 2,267 square kilometers of central Hokkaido with Mt. Asahi (the tallest peak in Hokkaido at 2,291m) as its highest point. The Asahidake Ropeway from Asahidake Onsen Village climbs to a 1,600m alpine plateau where summer wildflowers bloom and autumn foliage starts in early September, the first in Japan. The Sounkyo gorge on the park's eastern edge holds Ginga and Ryusei waterfalls and a separate ropeway up Mt. Kuro. Smaller onsen at Nakadake and Tenninkyo dot the park interior.
