Hiroshima deserves more than a quick visit to the Peace Memorial. This day itinerary helps you appreciate both the city's profound history and its remarkable rebirth.
Morning: Peace Memorial Park (8:00 AM - 11:00 AM)
Start early at the Peace Memorial Park when it's quieter and cooler. Begin at the Peace Memorial Museum, recently renovated to offer an even more powerful experience. Allow at least two hours to properly absorb the exhibits.
Afterward, walk through the park's monuments: the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), the Children's Peace Monument with its thousands of paper cranes, and the Cenotaph with views through to the dome.
Tip: Consider hiring a Hiroshima Peace Volunteer Guide for a free, personal tour.
Late Morning: Shukkeien Garden (11:30 AM - 12:30 PM)
This beautiful landscape garden, dating from 1620, offers a peaceful counterpoint to the morning's heavy emotions. Destroyed by the bomb and rebuilt, it symbolizes the city's regeneration. Walk the circuit around the central pond, crossing miniature bridges and passing tea houses.
Lunch: Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki (12:30 PM - 1:30 PM)
Head to Okonomimura, a multi-story building packed with okonomiyaki restaurants. Hiroshima-style differs from Osaka's: ingredients are layered rather than mixed, always including noodles and fried egg. Watch the chef build your "pizza" on the griddle right in front of you.
Afternoon: Local Exploration (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM)
Spend the afternoon exploring Hiroshima's personality:
- Hondori Shopping Arcade: Covered shopping street with local shops and cafes
- Hiroshima Castle: Reconstructed, with a museum inside and nice grounds for walking
- Cat Cafe or Local Bars: Hiroshima has a thriving cafe and bar scene
Evening: Riverside Dining (6:00 PM onwards)
Hiroshima is a city of rivers, and many restaurants overlook the water. Enjoy fresh oysters (Hiroshima produces 60% of Japan's oysters), local sake, and more okonomiyaki if you have room.
Getting Around
Hiroshima's streetcar (tram) system is the easiest way to navigate. A one-day pass covers unlimited rides.
