Sobering museum documenting the atomic bombing through artifacts, testimonies and exhibits promoting peace.
The Peace Memorial Museum is the main institution in Hiroshima documenting the atomic bombing of August 6, 1945. Designed by architect Tange Kenzo and opened in 1955, it was designated an Important Cultural Property in 2006. The main building holds artifacts including a heat-warped tricycle belonging to a young child, and stone steps bearing the shadow of a person vaporized at the hypocenter. The east building focuses on peace education. A lobby clock displays the number of days since the bombing, alongside the days since nuclear weapons were last tested somewhere in the world.
Local tips
The museum redesign (2019) is intensely emotional. Allow 90 minutes minimum. The audio guide is essential.
