When Kyoto's petals are gone, Tohoku and Hokkaido are still warming up. Sakura peaks one to three weeks later as you head north, making late April through mid-May the working window.
When to go
Approximate windows from Japan Meteorological Corporation forecasts:
- Southern Tohoku (Fukushima, Miyagi): mid to late April
- Northern Tohoku (Aomori, Akita): late April to early May
- Hokkaido (Hakodate, Sapporo): early to mid May
- Matsumae: mid to late May, late cultivars push the season further
Forecasts shift one to two weeks year-to-year. Check JMA updates from late March; book hotels two months ahead of your target window.
Tohoku
Hirosaki Castle, Aomori
About 2,600 trees on the castle grounds and along the moats, peak typically late April. The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival runs roughly mid-April through early May, with evening illumination of the cherries from sunset until 22:00. Aomori City as a 45-minute backup if Hirosaki sells out, by JR Ou Line.
Miharu Takizakura, Fukushima
A single weeping cherry, said to be over 1,000 years old, cordoned off in a small valley. Peaks mid-April. Park-and-shuttle from Miharu Station; weekend peaks add 30 to 60 minutes in the parking queue. Thin as a half-day on its own; pair with Hanamiyama Park 50 minutes away, a layered hillside of plum, peach, and cherry peaking the same window.
Funaoka Castle, Miyagi
The Hitome Senbonzakura: about 1,200 trees along the Shiroishi River, plus a slope ride up Mount Funaoka for views over the trees and the snowcapped Zaō range. Peak typically mid-April; short Tohoku Main Line ride from Sendai.
Hokkaido
Matsumae Castle Ruins
Hokkaido's southern tip, where sakura first reached the island and where the bloom still ends each year. About 10,000 trees of 250 varieties bloom in waves from late April into mid-May, including late yaezakura cultivars (doubled-petal variants). Two-hour bus from Hakodate Station: a long day trip rather than an overnight unless you're committing to the area.
Moerenuma Park, Sapporo
Isamu Noguchi's reclaimed-landfill sculpture park. Cherry trees come on in early May, peaking against the geometric earthworks Noguchi planned. Less a hanami picnic scene, more a quiet walk.
Logistics
Tohoku Shinkansen: Tokyo to Shin-Aomori in around three hours, roughly 17,500 yen one-way reserved, bookings 30 days ahead. Hokkaido Shinkansen currently terminates at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto; Sapporo is four hours by limited express from there, or a 45-minute flight from Hakodate Airport. Hirosaki, Matsumae, and the Miharu corridor fill two months ahead in peak years.
