Asakura

朝倉 · Castle-town wisteria and a 110-year onsen on the Chikugo

Asakura sits about 40 km southeast of Fukuoka, draped over the upper Chikugo River. Akizuki Castle Town — sometimes called the Little Kyoto of Chikuzen — preserves a samurai street pattern around the Kamakura-era castle ruins, with cherry trees in spring and maples in autumn. Harazuru Onsen, on the riverbank since the Meiji era, runs alkaline and sulfur baths side by side at fourteen ryokan. The 100-year-old wisteria at Kamitakaba blooms over a 420-square-meter trellis each May. Pace and quiet are the draws here, not headline sights.
