Overview
Edo-era samurai town that inspired Kurosawa, with stone walls and cherry-lined canals.
An 800-year-old samurai castle town nestled in a valley at the foot of Mt. Kosho, roughly an hour from Fukuoka City. The well-preserved Edo-period streets inspired Kurosawa's 1958 film The Hidden Fortress. Stone walls, a black gate, and cherry-lined canals make the approach especially striking during spring and autumn foliage seasons.
Local tips
The best-preserved sections are often away from the main entrance. Follow the less-obvious paths for authentic discoveries.
