Yunotsu Onsen
温泉津温泉
Overview
Nestled in the humble town of Oda City, this coastal Yunotsu Onsen is one of Japan's most fascinating historic onsen.
One of the oldest spa towns in Japan, with records of use stretching back over 1,300 years. The town grew during the Edo period as ryokan inns were built for sailors using the busy Yunotsu port, and the hot springs kept the settlement alive after the port declined and the nearby Iwami Ginzan silver mine closed in 1923. Today Yunotsu is the only hot spring town in Japan designated a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The main bath Motoyu features two tubs, one at 42 degrees and one at a near-scalding 46 to 47 degrees. A tap outside dispenses drinkable onsen water, reportedly beneficial in small amounts.
