Yoshida Shrine

吉田神社

4.3Est. 60Kyoto, Kansai

A gentle woodland trail connects several small shrines hidden in a forest on a hill. Despite its proximity to Heian Shrine and Ginkaku-ji, this complex sees almost no tourists, offering forested solitude. The wooden prayer plaques, or ema, reveal local wishes. All shrines within the complex have free entry.

Local tips

Look for the ema (wooden prayer plaques). They reveal what locals wish for. You can buy one and write your own wish. Rent a bicycle to cover more ground between temples. The flat terrain and bike paths make it the best way to explore.
