Overview
Birthplace of sauce katsudon since 1913, still serving the original recipe with century-old technique.
Fukui's soul food is sauce katsudon, a breaded pork cutlet drenched in Worcestershire-based sauce and served over rice, invented here in 1913 by founder Kaoru Takabatake after studying in Germany. The original Yoroppaken in central Fukui still queues at lunch, serving the dish exactly as it was a century ago: three thin cutlets layered in a lacquer bowl with a side of miso soup.
