Overview
A grand Edo-era public bathhouse faithfully rebuilt, one of Japan's most beautiful communal baths at just 300 yen.
Sakura-yu was originally built in 1640 and recently reconstructed using original techniques, creating one of Japan's most architecturally stunning public baths. The high-ceilinged wooden interior, stone bathtubs, and serene atmosphere recall a bygone era. At just 300 yen, it's one of the best-value onsen experiences in Kyushu.
Local tips
Visit during Yamaga Lantern Festival (August 15-16). Thousands of paper lanterns illuminate the town and women dance wearing lantern headdresses.
