Overview

The head shrine of all 44,000 Hachiman shrines in Japan, more important than many tourists realize.

Usa Jingu is the original Hachiman shrine, the head of a network of over 44,000 Hachiman shrines across Japan, making it one of the most historically significant Shinto sites in the country. The vermilion buildings, ancient forest, and lotus-covered pond create a spectacular setting. Despite its supreme status, it receives far fewer visitors than Ise or Izumo.

Local tips

Usa Jingu uses a unique prayer style. Clap FOUR times instead of the usual two. July lotus season fills the sacred pond with pink blooms.
