Tsuboya Pottery District

Naha's pottery district has been producing ceramics since 1682, when the Ryukyu royal government consolidated the island's kilns here by decree. The cobblestone Suuji Path winds past galleries, workshops, and shops selling yachimun, Okinawan ceramics known for earthy colors and bold patterns, including the shisa lion-dog figures that stand guard outside homes across the islands. Some studios have operated continuously for generations. You can watch potters at work, buy directly from makers, and try throwing or hand-painting at workshops that accept walk-ins. The Tsuboya Pottery Museum provides historical context with fine examples of the craft across the centuries.
