Teshima Island

Teshima, a small island in the Seto Inland Sea off Kagawa Prefecture, has become one of Japan's most compelling art destinations through the Setouchi Triennale project. The centerpiece is the Teshima Art Museum, a water-drop-shaped concrete shell by architect Ryue Nishizawa with no interior walls, where natural springs seep through the concrete floor and form shifting water patterns beneath an open sky. Across the island, terraced rice paddies, coastal forest, and old buildings serve as exhibition spaces for international artists. Electric bicycles available at the ferry port are the practical way to navigate the hilly terrain. A community kitchen serves meals made from local ingredients.
