Overview
Tours are offered of this historical, restored government building with a Japanese garden.
Japan's only remaining Edo-period provincial magistrate's office offers a rare glimpse into historical government administration, with tatami-floored chambers, torture devices, and rice storage granaries still intact. Built in 1615, the complex served as the seat of power for the Tokugawa shogunate's direct rule over the mineral-rich Hida region. Audio guides explain the fascinating daily operations of Edo bureaucracy and the morning markets that continue outside.
Local tips
The morning markets (7-12) at Miyagawa River and Jinya-mae are where locals shop. The old town streets are best before 9 AM.
