Workshops typically last about an hour, during which instructors guide you through painting your own piece using the distinctive makie technique of sprinkling gold and silver powder onto wet lacquer. You can choose from plates, chopsticks, and small boxes as your canvas. It doubles as a shop selling finished pieces by local artisans, so even if you skip the class, browsing the shelves of richly layered lacquerware is worthwhile.
