Shizuiwaya Shrine

Shizuiwaya Shrine in Oda, Shimane Prefecture, occupies a natural cave roughly 25 meters deep and 10 meters high along the Sea of Japan coast. The cave has been a site of worship since ancient times and ties into the broader Izumo cycle of Japanese mythology. The approach follows a coastal path with views of the rocky shoreline and crashing waves, and in autumn the trees framing the cave entrance turn vivid colors. Compared to the larger Izumo shrines, this one sees fewer visitors and carries a more intimate atmosphere. It pairs well with nearby Iwami Ginzan silver mine or the Sanbe Azukihara buried forest for a full day in the Oda area, covering geology, history, and mythology in a compact geography.
