Overview

UNESCO-listed church built for hidden Christians who kept their faith secret for 250 years.

A UNESCO World Heritage component built in 1882 by French missionary Father Marc Marie de Rotz in the Sotome coastal district. The simple whitewashed church served the kakure kirishitan, hidden Christians who secretly maintained their faith for 250 years during Japan's ban on Christianity. The surrounding clifftop village overlooks the Goto Sea, and the adjacent de Rotz Memorial Museum preserves the priest's legacy.
