Ryuokyo Gorge
龍王峡
Overview
Dragon-spine volcanic gorge with suspension bridges connecting two onsen towns along Kinugawa River.
Formed by volcanic eruptions that left exposed bedrock resembling a dragon's spine, this 3-kilometer gorge along the Kinugawa River offers a hiking trail connecting Kawaji Onsen and Kinugawa Onsen. Suspension bridges span turquoise pools, and the Torafuku and Shiragane waterfalls punctuate the walk. Autumn colors reflecting in the still water between rapids create scenes that rival the more famous Nikko shrines above.
Local tips
Bring your own small towel. Place it on your head (not in the water). That's how the regulars do it. The 2-day World Heritage Pass covers all shrine and temple admissions. It saves time and money.
