Overview
Mountain public bath famous as one of Japan's three best 'beautifying' springs.
Ryujin Onsen is a remote hot spring village located along the Hidaka River. The 'Motoyu' is the main public bathhouse, featuring high-quality sodium bicarbonate water that feels oily to the touch and is legendary for making skin smooth and clear. The village has a history of over 1,300 years and was once a favored retreat for the Lords of Kishu. The bathhouse is constructed primarily from Hinoki (cypress) and Sugi (cedar) wood, with large windows overlooking the rushing mountain river. It is an incredibly atmospheric location, especially in the evening when the river is lit. The facility is known to be tolerant of tattoos, particularly for international travelers making the long journey into the mountains.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
