Located inside Echigo-Yuzawa Station, Ponshukan is a sake lover's paradise disguised as a train station shop. For 500 yen, you receive five tokens and a sake cup, then choose from approximately 117 sake vending machines representing every brewery in Niigata Prefecture. A salt bar with different regional salts is provided to cleanse the palate between tastings. The adjacent shop sells the highest-rated sakes from the machines, plus local pickles, dried fish, and rice products as perfect pairing snacks.
Local tips
The machines with the most worn buttons indicate local favorites. Try numbers that are nearly rubbed off. Use a salt from a different region between each sake for a true Niigata tasting experience.
