Overview

Seaside aquarium featuring Hokkaido marine life, dolphin shows, and penguin walks along snowy paths in winter.

Otaru Aquarium sits on the Sea of Japan coast and runs outdoor shows with penguins, dolphins, and sea lions in an open-air arena against a backdrop of ocean. Inside, tanks cover local Hokkaido species alongside tropical and deep-sea exhibits. The facility has a distinctly old-school feel compared to larger modern aquariums, which some visitors find charming. The penguin parade, where staff lead the birds on a walk through the grounds, happens twice daily. In summer the outdoor pools are fully operational, while winter hours and programming are reduced. About two to three hours is enough. Combine with a walk through Otaru's canal district afterward.
