Onomichi
Overview
Charming hillside port town with narrow temple-lined paths, scenic views, and gateway to Shimanami Kaido cycling.
Hillside port town on the Seto Inland Sea with 25 temples connected by stone paths, earned its reputation as a literary and filmmaking location through its layered alleys and harbor views. The Temple Walk links old shrines and temples up the hillside, with Senkoji accessible by ropeway for views over the water. The town is also the starting point for the Shimanami Kaido, a 70-kilometer cycling route across six islands to Shikoku. Rental bikes are easy to find at the ferry terminal. The local ramen features a pork and seafood broth with flat noodles, served at small shops throughout town. The traditional wooden buildings and unhurried pace make it a good place to slow down.
