Overview
Secret feudal porcelain valley where 30 kilns still produce behind the ruins of old guardhouses.
A secluded valley that served as the secret kiln site of the Nabeshima clan, who produced Japan's finest porcelain exclusively for feudal lords. The narrow gorge was deliberately chosen for its defensible terrain, and guards prevented potters from leaving to protect trade secrets. Today 30 kilns continue producing in the valley, with hiking trails connecting workshops past the remains of the old guardhouses.
