Ochiai Village

落合集落
A vertical village clinging to a steep mountainside in the Iya Valley. Japan's last truly isolated settlement.
This Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings climbs a near-vertical mountainside at the head of the Iya Valley. Stone-walled terraces, thatched farmhouses, and tobacco-drying barns cascade down the slope. Some houses have been restored as rentable accommodation by the Chiiori Trust. The views across the valley are vertigo-inducing.
Stay overnight at Chiiori. The restored thatched house run by Alex Kerr. Book well ahead as it only sleeps a few guests.
