Overview
Millennium-old shrine whose torii pierces neighboring buildings, hidden at Nishiki Market's end.
Tucked at the eastern end of Nishiki Market, this 1003 shrine dedicated to the god of scholarship has a torii gate so tightly wedged that its crossbeams pierce the walls of neighboring buildings. A natural spring bubbles up in the grounds, and a nostalgic fortune-telling machine delivers paper fortunes in English and Japanese. Most market visitors walk right past without noticing the entrance.
