V-shaped ravine transforms into a tapestry of crimson and gold each October, viewed from bridges spanning its depths.
100-meter-deep ravine carved by the Oya River in the Kurikoma area of Osaki, Miyagi. It is famous for autumn foliage, when the steep valley walls blaze with color visible from a bridge spanning the gorge.
A 1km canyon carved by the Naruko River through tuff rock, with walls reaching 100 meters. The autumn foliage (late October) is unusually dense due to the canyon's sheltered microclimate. A footpath along the canyon floor is open until late November. Naruko Onsen, the hot spring town at the canyon's edge, is part of a three-town spa district and is a center for kokeshi doll carving, with workshops open to visitors. From Furukawa Station (Tohoku Shinkansen stop) the local Rikuu Higashi Line takes 25 minutes to Naruko-Onsen Station.
