Mount Kanpu Revolving Observatory
viewpoint
寒風山回転展望台
A revolving observation deck atop a volcanic peak offering a 360-degree panorama of the Sea of Japan, rice paddies, and the Oga coastline.
Mount Kanpu is a 355-meter dormant volcano at the center of the Oga Peninsula, and its summit observatory slowly rotates to give visitors a full 360-degree panorama without moving from their seats. The views encompass the Sea of Japan, the rice paddies of the Noshiro plain, and the jagged Oga coastline. At the mountain's base, a geological curiosity called 'Fuketsu', a hole in the second caldera, emits mysteriously cold wind year-round.
Drive up the Panorama Line for the most dramatic approach. Before entering the observatory, walk to the Fuketsu cold-wind hole at the base of the second caldera. It blows freezing air even in August.
