Mount Iimori
landmark
飯盛山
Memorial hill of the teenage Byakkotai warriors with a unique spiral-helix 1796 pagoda.
This hillside is where the teenage Byakkotai warriors of the Aizu clan retreated during the 1868 Boshin War, mistakenly believing their castle had fallen, and chose ritual suicide rather than surrender. The memorial and graves sit at the summit beside a unique spiral triple-helix Sazaedo pagoda from 1796 that visitors ascend and descend without crossing the same path twice. The panoramic view of Tsuruga Castle proves the young warriors' tragic error.
