Daily morning market that has existed in one form or another for more than 300 years.
The Miyagawa Morning Market has run along the Miyagawa River in Takayama for over 300 years, with stalls opening each day from around 7 AM to noon. Local farmers, craftspeople, and food sellers line the embankment, offering seasonal produce, handmade pickles, miso paste, Hida beef skewers, mitarashi dango, and locally made woodwork and textiles. The vendors, many of them elderly farm women, are friendly and unhurried. Arrive early for the best selection and a quieter atmosphere before tour groups arrive. The riverside setting with mountain views makes it genuinely pleasant, and the market connects naturally to Takayama's old town district a short walk away.
