支笏湖
Caldera lake south of Sapporo surrounded by volcanic peaks, with year-round clarity and winter ice festival.
Caldera lake about 40 kilometers south of Sapporo, known for its exceptional water clarity and the striking blue-green color that comes from its mineral content. In winter, the annual Ice Festival sets up sculptures made by spraying lake water through nozzles until it freezes in translucent aquamarine layers. Evening lighting turns the finished pieces vivid shades of blue and purple. In warmer months the lake is popular for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and hiking the volcanic slopes surrounding the shore.
