Read about Cultural context
Overview
A mountainous peninsula dotted with mysterious stone carvings, hidden temples, and Japan's oldest wooden structure.
The Kunisaki Peninsula developed a unique syncretic religion blending Shinto and Buddhism called Rokugo Manzan. The mountains are riddled with caves, stone Buddhas, and temple complexes. Highlights include Makiodo Temple (with Japan's oldest wooden Amida Buddha), Kumano Magaibutsu (cliff-carved Buddhas reached by climbing massive stone steps), and Futago-ji Temple.
Local tips
Kumano Magaibutsu requires climbing steep natural stone steps. Wear proper shoes. The 8m-tall cliff Buddha at the top is breathtaking.
