A sleepy hot spring village on the Amakusa Islands where the ocean views from the outdoor baths are endless.
Tucked into the western coast of Amakusa, this quiet onsen village has been welcoming bathers for over 700 years. The public bath Shirasagi-no-yu has outdoor pools overlooking the East China Sea, and sunset bathing here is magical. The village itself has just a handful of ryokan and almost no visitors, true rural Kyushu.

Time your visit for sunset. The west-facing rotenburo at Shirasagi-no-yu turns golden as the sun drops into the East China Sea.
