Kumamoto Castle
熊本城
Overview
Striking black-facade castle built in early 1600s with commanding city views, being restored after 2016 earthquake.
Known for its dramatic black facade and commanding position above the city. Built in the early 1600s, it has changed hands, been damaged, and been rebuilt several times over the centuries. The 2016 earthquake badly damaged the structure, and the restored main tower reopened with exhibits on the castle's history and a restoration timeline documented through models and video. An observation floor provides views across the grounds and the surrounding city. A special walking route lets you see the ongoing stone wall and turret restoration work up close, giving the visit an extra layer of living history that sets it apart from more fully restored castles.
