Overview

Kozan Park in Yamaguchi is the site of Ruriko-ji Temple, a National Treasure and one of the finest pagodas in Japan.

Kozan Park in central Yamaguchi brings together centuries of the city's history across its grounds, planted with plum, cherry, and maple trees. The five-storied pagoda of Rurikoji Temple, completed around 1442 and a designated National Treasure, has stood without rebuilding ever since. Nearby, the historic buildings Chinryutei and Rosando were used as meeting places by anti-shogunate activists during the lead-up to the Meiji Restoration. Visitors can climb to the second floor of Chinryutei where clandestine meetings were held. The Mori family cemetery behind the tea house holds the last three daimyo of the Choshu domain. Admission to the park is free.
