興福寺
Overview
Nagasaki's oldest Chinese temple and birthplace of Obaku Zen in Japan.
Kofukuji in Nagasaki is the oldest Chinese-style temple (Obaku Zen) in Japan, founded in 1624 by Chinese residents of the city. The vermilion main gate and Daippomon gate are striking examples of Ming Dynasty architecture rarely seen outside China. The temple played a key role as a gathering place for Nagasaki's Chinese community during the Edo period, when it was one of few places where Chinese culture was openly practiced. The main hall houses important Buddhist statues, and the grounds feature a tranquil atmosphere that contrasts with the city below. Especially beautiful when the grounds are lit during Nagasaki Lantern Festival in February. Located in the Teramachi temple district, it pairs well with nearby Sofukuji and Shofukuji temples for a half-day walk through Nagasaki's Chinese Buddhist heritage.
Local tips
Visit as part of the Teramachi temple street walk, which connects four historic temples. The Chinese-style vegetarian cuisine (shippoku ryori) has roots in this temple's kitchen.
