Overview
Historical onsen site featuring pleasant outdoor ceramic barrel baths.
Mandara-yu is said to be the location where a Buddhist priest prayed for 1,000 days to bring forth the hot springs that founded Kinosaki. The building features a beautiful green tiled roof that stands out against the wooden townscape. While the indoor bath is simple, Mandara-yu is most loved for its outdoor 'shigaraki' ceramic barrel baths. These individual tub baths allow visitors to soak while gazing up at the forested mountainside directly behind the bathhouse. It is located slightly further away from the central canal, offering a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere than the busier Ichino-yu or Goshono-yu. Tattoos are fully accepted without restriction.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
