Overview
Humorous Obon ritual featuring masked ancestors and dancing.
During the Obon period (late August), Ishigaki Island holds a unique performance called Angama. Two people dressed as an old man (Ushumai) and an old woman (Umi) represent spirits from the 'other world.' They visit houses to perform dances and answer audience questions in high-pitched, comical voices. It’s a mix of comedy, ancestral worship, and community bonding. The performances are accompanied by Sanshin music.
