ひめゆり平和祈念資料館
Poignant museum commemorating high school girls who served as nurses during the Battle of Okinawa, most of whom died.
The Himeyuri Peace Museum stands above a cave used as an emergency field hospital during the Battle of Okinawa. It tells the story of the Himeyuri Student Corps, 222 female students aged 15 to 19 and 18 teachers mobilized to work as nurses in underground surgical wards with almost no supplies. When the Japanese military dissolved the nursing units as the battle collapsed, the students were abruptly left on the battlefield. Of 240 corps members, 136 died. The museum displays photographs, personal belongings, and written testimonies. The adjacent Himeyuri Monument marks the cave entrance where many of them were killed.
